Start Middle School Right

Middle School is a difficult time for kids. They’re no longer elementary schoolers, but not quite ready for that “young adult” label. It’s important for kids in the middle years to have some autonomy but also the consistency and discipline in their lives to be successful.

So what’s a parent to do? With the mood swings typically associated with  kids this age, a change of schools, new interests, and more difficult classes, you have a lot to contend with. Luckily, thanks to the Internet, a lot of help is out there for you!

You’ve started in the right place: our school Web site. Communication with a middle school student can be challenging at times. Plus, with sports, clubs, and homework, your child is probably very busy and active. Be sure to come back and visit our site often. We will post our most recent news here and list upcoming events on our calendar. Have questions about a class? Contact your child’s teacher. It’s that simple.

As the middle school years start in your household, having a collection of good resources is vitally important. Scholastic offers a series of articles for parents of middle schoolers from what to expect in each grade and getting ready for school to learning who’s who at school and how to stay connected with your child. Bookmark the page, and come back to it again and again throughout the school year.

Outside the classroom, allow your child a good balance. Children this age start to come into their own. They develop interests, pay more attention to what’s going on in the world, and acquire a sense of empathy. Nurture these new ideals by talking to your child often and encouraging him to expand his extracurricular interests.

Now that you’ve done your homework, encourage your child to do his. Kids Health allows children to walk through the steps to prepare for middle school on their own. The site also offers advice from middle schoolers themselves! We will see you on the first day of school!
